How to Prepare to Ride Your Motorcycle This Spring in North Seattle

If you're eager to get your motorcycle out of storage and back on the road this spring, you're definitely not alone. Before taking your first ride of the season, remember to tend to your motorcycle's necessities. Don't forget, you also need adequate preparation before hitting the road. Ossinger's NW Enterprises in North Seattle has some tips that can help you be prepared to take on the spring roads safely.

Prepare Yourself for the Spring Roads

While your motorcycle was being held in storage, you also took a break from riding. Be sure you're prepared and playing it safe as you hop onto your motorcycle this season. Remember that although you may feel as if you never took a break from your motorcycle, it's better to take it slow and safe.

Wear the Proper Riding Gear

Like in any other season, it's very important that you wear the proper motorcycle riding attire. This includes: long pants, over the ankle boots, long sleeves, a helmet and gloves. Although temperatures are starting to heat up, it's likely you'll still run into some cold riding conditions, especially late at night or early in the morning. Before heading out on your motorcycle, be sure to wear garments that will keep you warm should you encounter cold temperatures.

Get Into Riding Shape

It may sound silly to some, but after taking a break from your motorcycle for a season or two, your instincts may be in need of sharpening. Start off slow and avoid riding at high speeds. You will need time to adjust not only to the road conditions, but also to your own reaction time and perception. Avoid going into turns too fast and remember to keep and eye out for road dangers. As the season move forward, you will start to feel more comfortable and at home on your bike.

Be Prepared for Road Conditions

Although spring is more bright and sunny than winter, there may still be some leftover road issues from the past season that are hard to see. Keep an eye on the road and watch out for potholes caused by winter storms. If you're riding through an area that experiences snow, look out for slippery road salts and sand leftover from the winter season. If temperatures are still chilly, ice on the road is still a possibility. Be extra cautious around other vehicles since most drivers probably aren't too aware of motorcycle riders. To make sure your motorcycle is ready for the spring, prepare it with a full synthetic oil change in North Seattle. Prepare Your Motorcycle for the Spring

Now that you're ready to conquer the road this spring, be sure your motorcycle is ready as well. There are several components you should inspect before heading out for a spin. Start with these easy tasks.

Charge Your Motorcycle's Battery

It's quite common for motorcycle batteries to die out while in storage if they're not properly connected to a charger all winter long. The best chargers to rely on may be referred to as 'smart chargers' because they turn off before overcharging your battery. Overcharging as well as letting your battery die can both be bad for the overall lifespan of the battery. Check on your battery a few weeks before you plan to bring out your motorcycle just in case there are battery issues. This will give you enough time to resolve these issues or even order a new battery.

Replace Your Motorcycle's Fluids

As mentioned earlier in this post, changing your motorcycle's oil before taking it out of storage is essential. When you change the motorcycle's oil, it's also a good idea to replace the oil filter. Once that's done, move onto the antifreeze. If you had a winter mix in your motorcycle, flush the antifreeze and replace it. This is even more important if your motorcycle rides hot. Consider draining your brake fluid and replacing it as well. Brake fluid is prone to going bad after absorbing moisture. This can be quite common during the winter months when your motorcycle is in storage. Play it safe and replace it instead of simply topping it off.

Check On Your Motorcycle's Chain

If your motorcycle depends on a chain to function, take some time to check on it. Be sure it's lubricated properly before taking your motorcycle outdoors. Look out for worn sprockets and test the tension. Check the manufacturer's recommendations in order to ensure the tension is correct during your rides.
