Basic Care for Your Motorcycle

You don't have to be an experienced mechanic in order to keep your bike in great shape. Regular maintenance can ensure your bike works great and looks great for longer. Ossinger's NW Enterprises in Seattle has some tips to help you get started with some basic motorcycle maintenance.

Check Your Tire Pressure

Checking your bike's tires should ideally be done weekly, but most people forget to do it at all. The tires are a hugely important component when it comes to your safety and your motorcycle's well being. If your tires are under inflated or overinflated, this could negatively affect your ability to maneuver and brake while on the road. Your owner's manual should have information regarding your motorcycle's ideal tire pressure. You can easily check the pressure using a pressure gauge and fix your tires accordingly.

Take Care of Your Chain

The condition of your chain can greatly affect your ride and life of certain parts of your bike. If the tension isn't correct it can cause unnecessary wear on your gear box, less than smooth gear shifts and may reduce your drive chain's life. Your owner's manual should have instructions for the ideal tension on your specific motorcycle. As you're setting it, keep in mind that the tension may change a little when the bike is carrying a passenger. If possible, have someone sit on the motorcycle so the tension is more accurate. Don't forget to also add some lubricant to your chain.

Change Your Oil

Changing your oil at the recommended intervals is extremely important since the oil is what keeps your engine healthy and protected. With the right tools and some help from you owner's manual, changing the oil isn't very hard. Your manual will help you locate the oil filler cap, the sump plug and the oil filter. Simply drain the oil, replace the filter, refill the oil, startup your bike and check for leaks. Once you turn off your motorcycle, check the oil to make sure it's at the right level.
