It’s that time of year when the frost has melted and it’s time to start caring for your lawn again. Pull that lawnmower out and give it a good inspection before getting started. This checklist will help you remember what you need to do.

Check the Spark Plug

Look at the inside tip of the spark plug in the little space where the metal bends in called the “gap”. Make sure that the gap is wide enough with a spark plug gap tool. If not, bend it up to where the tool can fit in with ease. If the plug looks burned, you will need a new one. Otherwise you can clean it and reuse it. It is a good idea to get a new spark plug each season, but you should check it as you use the machine.

Clear the Air Filter

If you have a paper air filter, blow it clean with a high pressure air hose. If it is quite dirty, you may need to replace it. Foam filters should be cleaned with water and detergent. Let it dry before putting it back in. It is rare that you need to replace a foam filter. This simple cleaning should be sufficient.

Change the Oil

You should replace the oil every year whether you think it needs it or not. Dirt enters the oil over the course of the season, and it can ruin your engine. So start the year off right with a fresh batch every time. Consult your owner’s manual for the proper procedure on your model of lawnmower.
